Michigan Steelhead are undoubtedly the hardest fighting, most acrobatic, and most exciting fish to catch in the great lakes and possibly North America. This is why steelhead are so highly sought after wherever they are found. In their native waters of the pacific coast, fishermen will spend days sometimes weeks in search of just one encounter with the prize fish.
Chinook salmon or king salmon are the largest of Michigan salmon species. The state record is a whopping 46 pounds 1 ounce but they average around 12-14 pounds, this is the same average weight of most chinook found in Alaskan waters. Salmon fishing is a beautiful time in Baldwin, Michigan as the colorful leaves change and the salmon fill the river.
Coho salmon or Silver Salmon were the first species of salmon planted in the great lakes. They were planted in the Platte River in the early 1960’s. These salmon are smaller then their cousins the Chinook but make up for in their aggressiveness and acrobatics when hooked. These are a blast to fight on light tackle and put on a real show when hooked.
